Electric Flame Scallop

Divemaster Ko Yukutake came across this sort of rare-hard to find Electric Flame Scallop (Ctenoides ales) in a crack while exploring the Pearlman Tunnel.

It was long thought that the electrical charge looking flash along the scallops lip was from bioluminescence, but according to reserach done by Lindsey
Dougherty, a researcher from the University of California Berkeleyworking at the Lembeh Resort in Indonesia it turns out that the lights are not from
bioluminescence, but instead are only from reflection of sunlight in the ocean (or a dive torch!) The clams have a highly reflective tissue on the very outer
edge of their mantle that is exposed and then hidden very quickly, so the change back and forth from the white reflective tissue to the red tissue creates the
appearance of flashing.

Whatever the cause of the "Flashing" it is pretty impressive.
