Sugarcane Locomotive in front of the Mill

The Rota Mill, Nanyo Kohatsu Kabushiki Kaisha Sugar Mill, was built in the late 1920's to early 1930's. As indicated on the
1933 map, most of the sugar production on Rota was located in the relatively flat eastern region of the island. The cut cane
was brought from the fields to this factory on narrow gauge rail cars pulled by the engine on display here at the mill and
others like it. It was important to process the cane as soon as possible after cutting to get the most juice from it.
